I just won exemplary marks, high praise and a "best speaker" ribbon my Toastmasters meeting, yesterday—I'm flying high. And today? I opened my email to a rejection from speaking at a conference I really wanted. Oof.
Here’s the truth: rejection isn’t the opposite of success. It’s part of the path.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was cut from his high school team in 9th grade. He just wasn’t seen as good enough. But instead of giving up, he worked relentlessly, proved himself, and is now the 2025 NBA MVP. MVP! MVP! Sorry, it gets stuck in my head after chanting it all night at the games!
Lu Dort went undrafted, overlooked by every NBA team. He didn’t let that stop him. He clawed his way into the league and became one of the most respected defenders in the NBA. And I can't help but imagine how amazing it feels every time the crowd gets loud with, "Luuuuuuuuuu!" every time he has the ball.
Jalen Williams was just 5’6” as a high school freshman, constantly overlooked for being too small. But he kept working, hit a growth spurt, and let his game speak for itself. Now he’s not just in the NBA—he’s an All-Star with a bright, unstoppable future. (and my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE to watch!) Next season (when we have to provide our own game clothes!) my jersey will be donning a #8 on it.
Isaiah Hartenstein's career was full of uncertainty: drafted in the second round, moved from team to team, never guaranteed a spot. During the lows, he studied psychology to stay mentally strong. Now, he’s the Thunder’s powerhouse center with an $87 million contract!
Alex Caruso didn’t get drafted and started his career in the G League with the OKC Blue. He fought for every minute of playing time, eventually earning a championship with the Lakers. Now he’s back in OKC, proving that grit and defense can build an entire legacy.
Rejection feels like failure. But it’s actually a redirection. A setup for the comeback. A strengthening season.
So if you’re feeling that sting right now, hear me when I say: you’re not behind. You’re building.
Stay in it. You’re not done.
